State commits $393 million for first three Green Line stations

The Green Line Extension is one step closer to reality! The MassDOT Board unanimously approved a $393 million Intergovernmental Service Agreement (ISA) with the MBTA that will construct three new stations (Lechmere, Washington St, and Union Square). These stations will open in early or mid-2017.

“This vote by the MassDOT board is historic and monumental,” Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone told the News Service. He said, “We’re really excited because it allows the first three stations to be built and the entire extension to be fully designed, and we’re really excited about what it will mean for Somerville in terms of improving quality of life, adding new jobs, creating new tax revenue, not just for Somerville.”

“The MBTA is seeking about $557 million in federal New Starts funding to complete phases 3 and 4 of the project. Morrison said the $393 million allocated Wednesday would send a ‘significant’ signal to the New Starts program that the Green Line Extension is a strong project.”
