Cambridge Chronicle: Lechmere station moving

“Can’t get there from here: Lechmere station moves farther from neighborhoods”
East Cambridge residents will have to cross a busy seven-lane highway to get to the Lechmere T station after a condo developer moves the stop closer to his new development.

Quotes from the article…
Commuters in East Cambridge’s residential neighborhoods are expected to trek across McGrath O’Brien Highway to the new station, which would be located between Third Street and Museum Way, by 2010.

The move to relocate the Lechmere station is a unique partnership between the developer and the MBTA. Jones Lang LaSalle representatives told residents that the MBTA gave them the current Lechmere station at Cambridge Street. The developer gets the old station in exchange for building the new station, the representatives said.
The developer claimed the relocation of the station would help a bid to extend the Green Line into Somerville and Medford.

A ceremonial groundbreaking for the new Lechmere station is scheduled for Oct. 23, although developers maintain that the project is still in preliminary design stages.
